A Monumental Roman Serif
Antium is a distinctive serif typeface rooted in the tradition of Old Roman typography, inspired by monumental lapidary inscriptions found in the ancient cemetery of Pompeii. These stone-carved letterforms lend the typeface a timeless, architectural presence, combining historical authority with contemporary usability.
Engineered for Legibility & Balance
One of Antium’s defining characteristics is its generous x-height paired with notably short ascenders and descenders. This compact vertical structure creates a dense, balanced texture that enhances clarity and consistency, particularly at smaller sizes. The result is a typeface that remains highly legible while retaining a strong, sculptural identity.
Versatile for Editorial & Display Use
Thanks to its excellent readability, Antium performs reliably in editorial design, newsletters, books, and other printed materials where clarity is essential. At the same time, the bold personality of its glyphs makes it an excellent choice for headlines, titles, and display settings, where its classical roots and distinctive shapes can truly stand out.
Rooted in Classical History
The name Antium refers to the ancient city of Antinum (modern Anzio), once the capital of the Volscians before its conquest by Rome in 468 BC. Situated on the Mediterranean coast near Rome, Antium is steeped in legend—said to have been founded by a son of Ulysses and Circe—and history, as the birthplace of Roman emperors Caligula and Nero. This rich cultural heritage is reflected in the font’s enduring and monumental character.
