A Robust Square Serif for Display
Square serif typefaces are font families with strong visual emphasis, developed especially for advertising and display design within the context of growing industrialization. These typefaces, known as "Slab serif," "Egyptian," or "Mécanes," emerged alongside Gothic fonts, both responding to the need for a bolder and more robust visual expression for 19th-century industrial society.
The Legacy of the 19th Century Style
The first recorded slab serif typeface appeared in England in 1817, marking the beginning of a typographic design trend aimed at capturing attention with thick lines and solid structures. Initially, slab serif fonts were designed exclusively in uppercase, which enhanced their visual impact in printed materials. However, lowercase letters were soon added, expanding their versatility and allowing for more nuanced and accessible communication.
A Versatile Family for Modern Sports & Branding
The “Declamation” font family is a modern example of this tradition. It consists of seven weights, ranging from Light to Black, providing a versatile range for sports branding, posters, and various visual applications. Additionally, each weight includes a 12° slanted version, which in some cases features more calligraphic characteristics, evoking subtle italic qualities that add dynamism and elegance to typographic compositions.
