Rooted in Ancient History

Calcis takes its name from Chalkís—also known as Chalkida—the ancient capital of the island of Euboea in Greece. The name originates from the Greek word for copper or bronze, materials that symbolize strength, durability, and craftsmanship. This historical reference connects the typeface to the very origins of Western writing and cultural exchange. Colonists from this region founded several important cities in Magna Graecia, including Cumae, located on the southern coast of Italy. From this area emerged the early forms of the alphabet that would later shape modern Western typography. In its earliest stages, scribes drew letterforms using monoline strokes. Over time, however, the evolution of writing tools, materials, and the growing skill of calligraphers led to increasingly refined and expressive letterforms.

A Refined Geometric Sans

Calcis is a sans serif type family that reflects this long process of refinement. Its design is rooted in straight lines and primary geometric shapes, resulting in an austere, functional, and highly legible appearance. At the same time, the typeface is subtly enriched by the influence of countless anonymous calligraphers who, over centuries, polished and humanized these forms. The result is a typeface that balances clarity and warmth, precision and character.

Versatility for Text & Display

The Calcis family is available in five weights, each with a matching italic, offering flexibility for a wide range of design applications. It performs exceptionally well at small sizes, ensuring excellent readability in body text, while its strong structure and refined proportions provide elegance and visual impact in headlines and display settings.

OpenType Features & Language Support

Each font in the Calcis family includes a comprehensive character set of 377 glyphs, with carefully controlled kerning pairs for consistent and professional typography. Advanced OpenType features enhance typographic expression, including old-style numerals, standard and discretionary ligatures, and case-sensitive forms. Support for Central European languages through a full set of diacritics ensures broad usability across international projects.

Ideal for Editorial & Corporate Design

Calcis is an ideal choice for designers seeking a modern sans serif with historical depth—perfect for editorial design, branding, corporate communication, and digital interfaces where clarity, authority, and timeless style are essential.

This basic license allows you to use the font for personal or commercial static designs — anything printed or exported as a flat, non-editable image.

Allowed uses

You can use the font for:

  • Brand identities and logos
  • Printed materials (posters, flyers, packaging, stationery, invitations, etc.)
  • Videos (titles, credits, on-screen text)
  • PDFs and digital documents
  • Social media graphics

Not allowed

  • Embedding in websites, apps, e-books, or emails
  • Sharing, redistributing, or modifying the font
  • Using the font in team or server environments
  • AI training or large-scale commercial printing

License scope

The license is based on the number of users/computers. If you need more seats later, you can simply purchase additional users.

Webfont

Webfont License (For Websites)

This license lets you embed the font on your website using the @font-face rule, so your site’s text and headings display in that font. You’ll host the webfont files yourself and link them through your site’s CSS.

Allowed use

  • Embed the font on one domain only

Not allowed

  • Sharing one license across multiple websites or clients
  • Using the font for static graphics (logos, images, etc.) — for that, use a Desktop License instead

Note

Each webfont license applies to a single website. Agencies managing multiple sites need separate licenses for each domain.

ePub

Electronic Document License (For eBooks and Digital Publications)

This license allows you to embed the font in digital publications like eBooks, eMagazines, or eNewspapers.

Allowed use

  • Embed the font inside electronic documents or publications
  • Free updates to existing publications don’t require a new license

License scope

Each publication (or issue) requires its own license. Regional or format variations don’t count as separate publications.

Not allowed

  • Using the font for cover images — for that, use a Desktop License instead
  • Reusing the same license for different publications
Apps

App License (For Mobile Applications)

This license allows you to embed the font directly into a mobile app’s code, for platforms like iOS, Android, or Windows.

Allowed use

  • Include the font inside your app package for display within the app

Not allowed

  • Using the same license for multiple apps — each app needs its own license
  • Using the font outside the app (websites, print, etc.) without the appropriate license
Digital Ads

Digital Ad / Email License (For HTML5 Ads)

This license lets you embed fonts in digital advertisements, such as HTML5 banner ads or email campaigns. A webfont kit is provided for use in your ad creatives and may be shared with third parties producing the ads on your behalf.

Allowed use

  • Embedding fonts in HTML5 ads and email campaigns
  • Sharing the kit with collaborators working on your ads

Why this license?

Digital ad usage differs from regular websites — ad impressions fluctuate, while website traffic is more stable. The Digital Ad License is priced and structured for these variable campaigns, unlike standard Webfont licenses.

Not allowed

  • Using the license for websites or apps
  • Exceeding the number of impressions purchased without updating the license

Impressions

You can buy the license based on expected impressions before the campaign starts, or adjust later if the final number changes.
